What is the future of the free press?
That’s the question driving The Journalism 2050 Podcast, a new show from Columbia Journalism Review, hosted by our own Heather Chaplin, founding director of the Journalism + Design Lab, and Emily Bell, director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism.
Over the course of ten episodes,Chaplin and Bell interview journalists, historians, futurists and more, always asking: how did we get here and what ought we be doing?
Episode one, which just published, features a conversation with brilliant author and futurist Douglas Rushkoff, who shares his experiences at the origin of the commercial Internet and hanging with tech billionaires who want to escape the world they’ve created.Is the future land allotments, he asks.
Other guests include Ben Smith, former Politico reporter, and co-founder/editor-in-chief of Semafor; Azmat Khan, Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and head of Columbia University’s Simon and June Li Center for Global Journalism; and Candice Fortman and Sarah Alvarez, founders of Detroit’s Outlier Media.
