An Expanded Vision for Journalism + Design

Two years after its launch, Journalism + Design has been awarded $1.3 million from the Knight Foundation to broaden its design and systems-oriented approach to journalism innovation. We’ll expand our innovative model beyond The New School, offering open-source curriculum, forming partnerships with other journalism programs, introducing journalistic ethics and practice to design schools.

We’ll also continue our popular public programming and annually convene experts across disciplines in a rigorous, collaborative effort to address the most complex challenges facing 21st century journalism.

This grant builds on a previous award from the Knight Foundation, which allowed Journalism + Design’s founding director, Heather Chaplin, to launch the program that has become one of the university’s marquee initiatives.

Some of the new classes and workshops created by Journalism + Design include: Designing Workflow and Product Strategy for Newsrooms; Making Animated Video for News; and Facts/Alternative Facts.
